These Butterscotch Caramel Apple Oats are a cozy combination of warm fall flavors layered into one satisfying jar. The bottom layer combines diced apples, cinnamon, vanilla, salted caramel peanut spread, and vanilla protein powder for a sweet caramel apple flavor. The top layer brings together mashed banana, butterscotch chips, chopped pecans, and vanilla for a soft, buttery butterscotch flavor. Ground flax is mixed into both layers for added texture and thickness, making these overnight oats a delicious and filling option for an easy breakfast.

Sam's Kitchen Favorites

  • For this recipe, I used these 10 ounce overnight oat jars with lids.
  • I love these silicone mixing spoons. No more scraping the bowl, and the food doesn't stick to them!
  • My go-to angled liquid measuring cup . After multiple runs through the dishwasher, the numbers have not worn off.
  • For permanently engraved measurements, these measuring cups are fantastic!
  • For a more professional yet affordable mixing bowl, these stackable bowls with measurements marks work perfectly.
  • Acacia Wood Cutting Board. I use this board in many of my recipe photos to display my overnight oats. I love the warm wood finish because it creates a simple, natural background that helps the jars and layers of oats stand out. It’s also reversible and can be used as a cutting board, charcuterie board, or serving board, making it a versatile piece to have in your kitchen.

Helpful Tips

  • No salted caramel peanut spread? You can substitute regular peanut butter and add a little caramel sauce or caramel-flavored syrup. Almond butter or cashew butter can also work if you prefer a different nut butter flavor.
  • Want to skip the peanut butter altogether? Use a caramel spread or a little extra caramel sauce in the apple layer for a more traditional caramel apple flavor.
  • Use finely chopped pecans. Smaller pieces distribute throughout the butterscotch layer and give you that buttery pecan flavor without making each bite too crunchy.
  • Don't skip the cinnamon. A little cinnamon in the caramel apple layer helps bring the apple and caramel flavors together and gives these oats their cozy fall flavor.
  • To make these oats dairy free: Omit the yogurt or use Silk yogurt instead.
  • If omitting yogurt: Use a mashed banana in the top oat layer to maintain creamy texture.
  • What types of oats are best? I prefer rolled oats, but quick oats may be used as well for a softer consistency. Avoid using steel-cut oats, they will remain firm and chewy without cooking.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Cozy fall flavors. Caramel apple, cinnamon, butterscotch, banana, and pecans come together for a warm and comforting flavor combination.
  • Two delicious layers. The caramel apple layer and butterscotch pecan layer each have their own flavor, making every bite a little different.
  • Protein-packed. Vanilla protein powder adds protein to both layers while bringing extra vanilla flavor.
  • Naturally sweet. Mashed banana and diced apple add natural sweetness alongside the butterscotch chips and caramel spread.
  • Easy to customize. You can adjust the amount of butterscotch chips, pecans, or brown sugar replacement to suit your taste.
  • Filling and satisfying. Oats, protein powder, banana, and ground flax make this a hearty breakfast that can help keep you satisfied throughout the morning.
