These Cinnamon Plum Pecan Oats are a cozy combination of warm cinnamon, sweet homemade plum jam, and crunchy pecans. Creamy vanilla cinnamon oats are layered with a homemade plum jam that adds a naturally sweet and slightly tart flavor, while the pecans bring a delicious nutty crunch to every bite. It is a simple overnight oats recipe that feels perfect for a cozy fall morning.

Ingredients

Homemade Plum Jam

Cinnamon Pecan Oats

Directions

  1. Make the jam on the stove first: Add all jam ingredients to a medium size pot, and stir constantly with medium heat. When it seems the plums are mostly cooked down, remove from heat and mash them up. I recommend putting the jam in a bowl to help cool down faster and to prevent sticking to the pot. Add chia seeds to the jam and mix it together. To cool the jam, leave it on the counter for 30 minutes, then place in the fridge for an hour before using in oats. While the jam is cooling make the oat mixture and place in fridge until ready to assemble jars.
  2. Cinnamon Pecan Oats: Add all cinnamon pecan oat ingredients to a medium sized mixing bowl, stir until combined. Set aside.
  3. Complete Jar assembly: For a layered look, add a small amount of jam to the bottom of each jar, followed by half the oat mixture, next add remaining jam then top with remaining oat mixture.
  4. Let sit in the fridge overnight, or up to five days before eating.
  5. When ready to eat, serve with fresh fruit, granola, or nuts.

Sam's Kitchen Favorites

  • For this recipe, I used these 18 ounce overnight oat jars with lids.
  • I love these silicone mixing spoons. No more scraping the bowl, and the food doesn't stick to them!
  • My go-to angled liquid measuring cup . After multiple runs through the dishwasher, the numbers have not worn off.
  • For permanently engraved measurements, these measuring cups are fantastic!
  • For a more professional yet affordable mixing bowl, these stackable bowls with measurements marks work perfectly.
  • Acacia Wood Cutting Board. I use this board in many of my recipe photos to display my overnight oats. I love the warm wood finish because it creates a simple, natural background that helps the jars and layers of oats stand out. It’s also reversible and can be used as a cutting board, charcuterie board, or serving board, making it a versatile piece to have in your kitchen.

Helpful Tips

  • Use ripe plums. Ripe plums will give your homemade jam a naturally sweeter flavor and softer texture.
  • No need to peel the plums. The skins soften as they cook and add beautiful color to the jam.
  • Jam Shortcut Option: While canned plum pie filling will work if you're short on time, I highly recommend making your own plum jam. It has a fresher plum flavor and creates a lighter breakfast with less added sugar than traditional pie filling. Plus, you can easily adjust the sweetness to your taste.
  • Add the pecans right before eating. If you prefer a stronger crunch, keep the pecans separate and sprinkle them over the oats when you're ready to enjoy them.
  • To make these oats dairy free: Omit the yogurt or use Silk yogurt instead.
  • If omitting yogurt: Use a mashed banana to maintain creamy texture.
  • What types of oats are best? I prefer rolled oats, but quick oats may be used as well for a softer consistency. Avoid using steel-cut oats, they will remain firm and chewy without cooking.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Cozy flavors. Cinnamon, vanilla, plum, and pecans come together for a warm and comforting flavor combination.
  • Homemade plum jam. The plum layer adds a sweet and slightly tart burst of flavor throughout the oats.
  • Crunchy pecans. Pecans mixed into the oats add texture and a delicious nutty flavor.
  • Easy to customize. You can adjust the sweetness of the plum jam or add more cinnamon and pecans to suit your taste.
  • Satisfying and nutritious. With oats, protein, flax, fruit, and pecans, these oats make a filling option that can help keep you satisfied for hours.
